Three county teams wrapped up the preseason with a dress rehearsal of sorts on Friday afternoon.
Unaka welcomed Cloudland and Hampton to Stoney Creek for the annual Carter County Jamboree. Each team squared off against the other in a round-robin format and also competed in individual competitions.
In the opening quarter, Cloudland and the host Rangers squared off for a 12-minute session. The ‘Landers used several strong runs from Damien Black to move the ball into Unaka territory on the opening possession, but the Unaka defense recovered a fumble to end the drive.
Unaka saw Daniel Shearl find Devin Ramsey hit for a long gain, but the drive was stalled just inside Cloudland territory. CHS was unable to get anything going before the quarter expired.
In the second quarter, it was Hampton’s turn to get into the action by taking on Cloudland.
Isaiah Greenwell had a strong run to move Hampton to midfield, but Jed Childress had a sack to help stall the drive out. Triston Lacy got the CHS offense moving. However, the ‘Landers were unable to sustain the drive and was forced to punt.
The Bulldogs moved back to midfield, but Cloudland held firm in the final minute.
The final 12-minute quarter saw Unaka return to the field to take on Hampton. On the opening drive of the quarter, the Bulldogs scored the night’s lone touchdown as Gage Chambers caught a 21-yard pass from Conor Jones to give HHS a 6-0 lead. The score was set-up with strong runs from Caleb Oaks and Greenwell.
Unaka, however, answered with a lengthy drive of their own. Landon Ramsey and Logan Benway helped spark the UHS drive as the Rangers got into scoring position, but time ran out before they could break into the endzone.
Prior to the scrimmage action, the three schools saw players compete in the five individual competitions.
Hampton’s Morgan Lyons won the fastest lineman, Cloudland’s Triston Lacy was the faster back, Hampton’s Caleb Oaks had the farthest throw, and the Bulldogs’ Michael Harrison had both the longest kick and punt.
All three teams are set to open the 2019 season on Friday, August 23.
