It was smooth sailing for the Unaka basketball teams.
The Lady Rangers rolled to a 46-9 victory over Rockwood on Friday night in non conference action, while the Rangers eeked out a 45-42 win over the Tigers.
In the girls’ game, Unaka jumped out early as Myah Parlier helped spark a 14-0 lead after a quarter of play. The Lady Ranger defense continued to stymie the Lady Tigers as UHS held Rockwood to just one free throw, and took a 31-1 lead into the locker room at the half.
Several younger players got valuable time in the second half. Unaka maintained a 37-9 lead at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw Unaka outscore Rockwood 9-0.
Jada Whitehead and Parlier finished with 10 points apiece, while Madison Pierce had eight points. Tara Whitehead scored seven points in the win.
In the boys’ game, Unaka saw Rockwood jump out to a 12-8 lead, but the Rangers continued to fight and dug into the deficit. The Rangers trailed 19-18 at the break.
After the teams played even in the third quarter, Unaka took the lead for good in the fourth quarter for the win.
John Ramsey had 15 points, and Ryan Johnson had 14 points. Will Sexton had seven points in the win.
