A third-quarter run proved to be the catalyst the Lady Rangers needed.
Unaka used a 14-0 run to open the second half to get separation and never looked back as they took a 60-45 victory over University High in the District 1-A tournament at Daniel Boone.
With the win, the Lady Rangers advanced to take on Cloudland in semifinal action on Saturday with tipoff set for 6 p.m., at Daniel Boone.
It was a sluggish start for both teams.
Lyndie Ramsey answered early UH buckets with shots of her own, and a Tara Whitehead 3-pointer evened the score at 7-7 after eight minutes of play.
Zoie Grindstaff pushed Unaka into their first lead of the game in the opening seconds of the second quarter, and that sparked a 9-4 Unaka run. UH, however, battled back with a quick 5-0 run to even things up at 16-16 midway through the quarter.
The Lady Rangers used a T. Whitehead basket and an old fashioned 3-point play from Mackenzie Depew to take a 21-17 lead into the half.
The third quarter was all Unaka.
Quick buckets from Depew and Mailey Guy started the 14-0 run – which was part of a 21-2 run to open the quarter. The Lady Bucs were able to get some offense going in the closing minutes of the quarter, but Unaka held a 20-point lead at the end of the quarter.
The teams traded shots for most of the quarter as the Lady Rangers were never challenged.
Ramsey led the way with 18 points. J. Whitehead and Guy had eight points apiece, while Depew finished with seven points.
