The Unaka girls basketball team saw their season end in heartbreaking fashion.

The Lady Rangers were unable to overcome a Greenback 3-pointer in the final minute as Unaka dropped a 49-43 decision in the Region 1-AA quarterfinals.

The upset-minded Lady Rangers didn’t go down without a fight.

Myah Parlier scored four early points, but the Lady Cherokees held a slim 9-6 lead after eight minutes of play. Savannah Tipton, Cydney Forney and Parlier each hit a jumper in the second stanza. Unaka, however, saw Greenback take a 21-15 lead into the locker room at the half.

Parlier and company, however, took over in the third quarter.

The senior Parlier erupted for 16 points in quarter, while Madison Pierce and Jada Whitehead added big shots to propel UHS to a 36-35 lead going to the fourth quarter. The teams traded shots throughout a tight fourth quarter.

With the game tied, Greenback’s Kierra Bishop knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Lady Cherokees the lead for the last time as Unaka was unable to answer before time expired.
Parlier tallied 29 points to lead Unaka. Forney added five points, while Jada Whitehead added four points.

The loss ends Unaka’s season with a 14-18 mark.
