Unaka had to work overtime on Friday night. However, the Rangers got the job done.

Unaka picked up their first win of 2019 with a thrilling 34-28 victory over Cosby in overtime on Stoney Creek. With the win, UHS improves to 1-1 on the year.


In the early going, it was a back-and-forth battle.

After Cosby got on the board on the first offensive play of the game, Unaka responded midway through the quarter as Landon Ramsey hit Johnny Douglas for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Cosby answered in the closing minutes of the opening stanza to take a 16-6 lead after 12 minutes of play.

The Rangers got back on the board in the second quarter as Logan Benway found his way into the end zone from five yards out in the opening minute of the quarter. Neither team was able to get back on the board over the next 11 minutes as Coby held a 16-12 lead at the break.

Unaka set the tone early in the second half.

The Rangers’ Daniel Shearl scored from 10 yards out in the opening minute of the third quarter. L. Ramsey found D. Ramsey for the two-point conversion to give Unaka a 20-12 advantage.

Unaka pushed the advantage to 28-12 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter as Benway scored on a two-yard run. Nick Bowers caught a L. Ramsey pass on the conversion.

Cosby, however, scored quickly on the ensuing drive and then capitalized on a Unaka fumble to tie the game with 10:36 remaining.

The Rangers got a drive going in the closing minutes, but was unable to break the stalemate in regulation.

In the extra period, Unaka got the ball first and Benway pushed Unaka ahead with a short touchdown run. On the next possession, the Rangers intercepted Cosby in the end zone to secure the win and set off the celebration.

Benway finished with 85 yards rushing on 22 carries and three touchdowns, while Shearl added 57 yard on nine carries.

L. Ramsey was 17-of-21 passing for 173 yards and a score, while D. Ramsey had 145 yards receiving on six catches.
