Birchfield leads Cloudland past Hancock County

The three Cloudland seniors sent a statement on Saturday night.

Senior Colby Birchfield tallied 29 points as Cloudland rolled to an 89-54 victory over Hancock County in the Region 1-A quarterfinals.


Cloudland will now take on Cosby in Tuesday’s semifinals at Chuckey Doak Middle School at 7:30.

Senior Jesse Potter drained an early 3-pointer before Birchfield scored seven straight for CHS for a 10-0 lead. After a quick 5-0 Hancock run, Potter and Birchfield extended the Cloudland lead to 11 points, but the Indians ended the period on a 8-2 run to cut the CHS lead to 18-13 at the end of the quarter.

Dalton Vines kick started a quick 7-0 ‘Lander run, but HC pulled back within five points midway through the quarter. Brinkley Mull and senior Chris Wagoner helped Cloudland answer as the ‘Landers took a 10-point lead into the second half.

The third quarter was all Cloudland.

Wagoner and Potter drained early shots, while Birchfield held a steady hand as CHS started the quarter on a 20-7 run. The ‘Landers maintained a 63-45 lead heading to the final quarter. From there, Birchfield, Wagoner and Potter all hit 3-pointers to open the final stanza as the outcome was never in doubt during the frame.

Wagoner finished with 14 points, while Potter tallied 12 points. Mull scored seven points in the game. Vines and Ja. Potter had six points apiece.

Cloudland had seven players combine to hit 12 3-pointers in the game.
