Hampton held on for a thrilling win on Friday night.
The Bulldogs claimed a 65-61 win over University High inside Brooks Gym, while the Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 60-22 win.
The boys’ game was a battle.
After Hampton took a 19-16 advantage after the first eight minutes, a balanced attack helped the Bulldogs pushed the lead to 36-29 at the break.
Hampton came out of the locker room strong in the third quarter to push the lead to double-digits, but UH used a late run to close within three points after three complete quarters.
The teams traded buckets throughout the fourth quarter. In the closing minute, Hampton broke a tie and secured the win at the free throw line.
Cadon Buckles had 27 points to lead Hampton. Hayden Campbell added 10 points, while Michael Anspaugh added nine points. Geno Carrico scored seven points – including a pair of free throws to give Hampton the lead for good.
In the girls’ game, it was all Hampton.
The Lady Bulldogs opened the game on an 18-0 run and held a 31-4 advantage after a quarter of play. Hampton pushed the advantage to 44-6 by the half as Hampton started subbing in a number of players during the half.
The Lady Bulldogs maintained a 44-6 after the third quarter before UH used a quick run in the fourth to account for the final score.
