Hampton had a split decision in varsity action on Monday night.
The Lady Bulldogs rolled to a decisive 59-18 win over University High inside Brooks Gym, while the Bulldogs fell in a 66-65 heartbreaker at the buzzer.
In the girls’ game, it was all Hampton.
The Lady Bulldogs used a 17-0 run to close the first quarter to take a 19-4 lead after eight minutes of play. HHS continued the run in the second to push the lead to 37-13.
From there, Hampton held UH to just five second-half points to cruise to the win.
Piper Helle and Hannah Smith had 10 points a piece to pace Hampton. Ella Estep added six points.
University High was led by Emma Chandley and Lemy Ortiz who each scored eight points.
In the boys’ game, it was a thriller.
Hampton took a 19-4 lead into the second quarter, but UH used a run to take a 24-19 advantage. The Bulldogs used a run of their own to regain the lead and held a 34-29 advantage at the half.
In the third quarter, the teams traded shots as Hampton maintained a 53-51 advantage heading to the final quarter.
The teams continued to trade shots in the final eight minutes. Hampton regained a 65-64 lead with 15 seconds left, but UH was able to answer as Andrew Cole hit a shot at the buzzer to lift the Bucs to the win.
Chase Davenport led Hampton with 24 points. Bryce Fagan scored 18 points.
Cole led UH with 24 points.
