Hampton tallied 23 assists and had five players hit double figures in an 87-45 TSSAA Region 1-A first round win over Northview Academy Thursday night in Carter County.
The Bulldogs (25-7) meet North Greene on Saturday, Feb. 28, with a 5 p.m. tip-off in the regional semifinals at Chuckey-Doak High School.
North Greene enters the contest after a 58-56 last-second victory over Hancock County on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The Huskies were in action but the ‘Dogs sat on the outside awaiting to play Northview Academy after a steak of wintry weather in northeast Tennessee.
“You always worried about that,” Hampton head coach Ned Smith said about the extended layoff. “We had been off for a long time but we got in the gym some. The kids came out with a lot of energy and played well. We got a lot of kids in and I think our legs will be ready to play hard tomorrow night.”
Hampton’s Coby Jones and Nathan Norris fired in a three-pointer each to start up an offensive showcase in the opening stanza. HHS to moved ahead, 28-11, going to the second period.
The ‘Dogs kept up the intensity throughout the first half, securing a 55-22 lead at intermission led by 13 points from Cheyenne Camillo.
Camillo finished with a game-high effort of 16 points. Norris cashed in 13 points while Stanley Valentine and Jones tallied 12 each. Wyatt Lyons also turned in a double-digit scoring night with 10.
“We moved the ball well and knocked down the shots,” Norris, three assists, said. “We just have good team chemistry. We don’t care who scores, its just about finding the open man.”
Adam McClain cashed in eight points and led the distribution with five assists the on the night. Stone Hutchinson, Jones, Valentine and Camillo join Norris with three assists across the board.
Jared Wiltshire provided a solid effort of eight points to join McClain while Charlie Butler posted six points.
Jerry Lunsford and Hutchinson rounded out the scoring for Hampton with a free throw apiece.
Dawson Satterfield led the visitors with 12 points, respectively.
