Simply, the Bulldogs opened the District 1-A tournament in style.
Hampton scored early and often to rolled to a 77-41 victory over No. 3 North Greene on Saturday in the District 1-A tournament at Daniel Boone. The Bulldogs advance to meet South Greene in Tuesday night’s championship game.
Stanley Valentine set the tone early as he recorded a slam on the game’s first points, and Coby Jones took advantage of an and-one to push the Bulldogs lead to 5-0 early. North Greene made a run to tie the game at 8-8 with 3:32 to play in the first, but Valentine bookmarked an 8-0 run that doubled up the Huskies. Hampton held a 17-10 advantage after a quarter of play.
The Bulldogs continued to hold the momentum as Nathan Norris hit a jumper, and then Cody McClain sparked an 11-0 Hampton that was capped by Jared Wiltshire and Valentine shots. After Zane Britton drained a 3-pointer for North Greene, McClain added a shot right before the buzzer to give Hampton a 33-16 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Hampton left no doubt who was in control. Buckets by Stone Hutchinson and Valentine as well as Nathan Norris helped push the lead to 25 points. Cheyenne Camillo knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in a scoring blitz that extended the Hampton lead to 61-34 heading into the fourth quarter. The final quarter saw younger players get some playing time.
Valentine led the way with 18 points, while Norris tossed in 14 points. McClain added 13 points. Jones finished with seven points.
Hall led North Greene with 10 points.
