Cloudland boys, Elizabethton girls open with wins

Both the Cloudland boys and Elizabethton girls advanced with victories in their respective holiday tournaments on Saturday night.

The ‘Landers picked up a 70-57 victory over tournament host Sullivan North in the New People’s Bank Classic. Cloudland advances to play Cherokee, who defeated Daniel Boone 74-58 on Monday night at 8 p.m.

Colby Birchfield had a team high 21 points, while Preston Benfield tallied 19 points. Dalton Vines finished the game with 10 points. Earlier in the day, Sullivan North’s opening round game with Princeton Hall was canceled after Princeton Hall pulled out of the tournament.

In Charleston, the Lady Cyclones made quick work of the defending South Carolina Class AA state champions Bishops England as Elizabethton rolled to a 69-26 victory. The win advances Elizabethton to an 8 p.m., game on Monday night against North Forsyth (Ga.), who dispatched Mountain Brook (Ala.) 55-36.

Kayla Marosites recorded 28 points and 15 rebounds, while Kelci Marosites tallied 13 points in the game. Lady Cyclones will face either Hoover (Ala.) or Mt. Tabor (N.C.) on Tuesday with the winners squaring off for the Palmetto Division Championship.
