It was a Saturday special, but it didn’t turn out in Cloudland’s favor.
The Lady ‘Landers and the ‘Landers came up short at Avery County (N.C.) on Saturday afternoon in Newland. The games were make-ups from postponements last week.
The girls game saw Peyton Johnson score five first quarter points and DonRae Taylor added a basket to push Cloudland to a 7-6 lead after the first quarter. Faith Russell and Johnson scored four points apiece in the second half as the teams played even with Cloudland holding a 17-16 advantage at the half.
Avery pulled ahead in the third quarter despite five Cloudland points from Kendall Mull, and that proved to be the difference. The Lady ‘Landers made things interesting in the final minutes, but was unable to get back in front.
Mull led Cloudland with 15 points, while Johnson scored nine points. Russell finished the game with eight points.
In the boys’ game, Cloudland saw Jesse Potter scored six early points to keep pace with the Vikings as they trailed 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. Avery, however, pulled away in the second quarter by limiting the ‘Landers to just one field goal and four free throws as the Vikings held a 30-18 advantage at the half.
Cloudland tried to mount a comeback in the second half, but the Vikings doubled up the ‘Landers despite six points from Zac Benfield. The ‘Landers cut into the Avery lead in the fourth quarter as Benfield tallied nine points in the frame.
Benfield led the way with 19 points while Dalton Vines tallied 10 points. Preston Benfield scored seven points. Chris Wagoner and Potter finished with six points apiece.
