Cloudland had a tall task on Friday night. However, Coalfield used their best weapon to make it even tougher.
The ‘Landers saw their season come to a close in a 48-8 decision to the Yellow Jackets at Orr Field. Coalfield was paced by senior quarterback Parker McKinney as he accounted for five touchdowns – two through the air, two defensive touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown.
The ‘Landers found themselves in an early hole.
After going three-and-out on the opening drive, Cloudland saw Coalfield score quickly to take a 6-0 advantage four minutes into the game. The teams, however, traded three-and-outs as the ‘Lander defense forced the Yellow Jacket offense off the field, but was unable to convert on a pair of drives. McKinney broke free as he hit Parker McKinney for a 45-yard touchdown and then added the conversion with a pass as Coalfield increased the lead to two scores.
An interception return for 46 yards by McKinney gave Coalfield a 21-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Cloudland offense moved the ball to midfield, in part to a fourth down conversion on a Malachi Benfield pass to Triston Lacy, but another pick-six by McKinney stalled out the drive.
The ‘Lander defense ended the half on a high note as Josh Blair grabbed an interception in the closing seconds as Coalfield trailed 34-0 at the break.
After Coalfield opened the scoring in the second half with a McKinney run, the teams traded three-and-outs. Cloudland broke onto the board when Benfield found Jordan Coffey on a swing pass and the junior running back raced 46 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the fourth quarter.
The ‘Landers kept fighting but was unable to add another score.
Coffey finished with 53 yards receiving and 23 yards rushing. Blair added 26 yards on the ground.
Benfield was 5-of-15 pass for 59 yards.
Coalfield’s McKinney went 10-of-13 for 160 yards, while Ashton Lowe had 92 yards rushing.
Cloudland finished the 2017 season with a 9-2 record.
