Cloudland sweeps North on Senior Night

It was a clean varsity sweep in Roan Mountain on Friday night.

The Cloudland girls rolled to a 58-16 conference win over Sullivan North, while the ‘Landers won a thrilling 59-54 win.

In the girls’ game, Cloudland found the gas pedal early.

Jasmine Birchfield scored seven first-quarter points to power CHS to a 15-5 lead after eight minutes of play.

The Lady ‘Landers held Sullivan North without a field goal in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Raiders 19-2 in the frame.

From there, it was all Cloudland.

Birchfield finished with 17 points, while Mandy Benfield and Ella Benfield had eight points apiece. Karah Fields scored five points.

In the boys’ game, it was a tight battle from the opening tip.

Cloudland jumped out to a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. North used a quick burst of their own midway through the second, but the ‘Landers answered to hold a 26-22 halftime advantage.

Cloudland pushed their lead to eight points in the third quarter and then held off North in the frantic final minutes.

Bentley Gilbert led the way with 26 points, while Elijah Blair had 12 points.

Victor Hicks and Caleb Sluder had nine and seven points, respectively, while Chase Shell added five points.
