Cloudland sweeps UH

The Cloudland basketball teams bounced back on Tuesday night.

Both CHS squads picked up District 1-A wins over University High inside Sonny Smith Gymnasium as the Lady ‘Landers took a 58-42 victory and the ‘Landers scored early and often en route to a 74-34 win over the Jr. Bucs.

The CHS boys started the game in style as Jesse Potter drained an early 3-pointer and Chris Wagoner to help push the ‘Landers to an 11-0 lead midway through the quarter. Cloudland maintained a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Colby Birchfield scored seven points in the second stanza to help Cloudland push the lead to 15 points at the half.

The second half was much the same.

An 11-3 run sparked by Preston Benfield jumper saw the ‘Landers take a 23-point advantage. From there, it was all Cloudland.

Benfield led CHS with 16 points, while Birchfield tallied 14 points. Potter scored 12 points in the game.

The girls’ game saw the teams trade points early as a Payton Johnson three-point play tied the game midway through the first quarter. Lisa Ellis added a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the quarter to push CHS ahead 10-9 entering the second quarter.

The Lady ‘Landers began to get some sepearation with a 7-2 run that was capped by an Erin Julian bucket. Trinity Vines added back-to-back shots as CHS took a 28-21 lead into the half.

In the second half, Cloudland set the tone in the third quarter as Shian Strickland scored 11 points for the Lady ‘Landers to push the advantage to 13 points. From there, Cloudland kept the Lady Jr. Bucs at bay to take the win.

Strickland led both teams with 18 points, while Stacia Wilson added nine points. Johnson and Vines had eight points apiece.

Ari Ramsaran and Lexi Crouthers led UH with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
