Cloudland rolled in the Region 1-A opener on Friday night.
The ‘Landers scored 54 points in the first half to take a 60-20 victory at Hancock County. With the win, CHS improves to 1-2 on the season.
Hancock County capitalized on an early Cloudland turnover with a long touchdown run as the Indians took an 8-0 lead three minutes into the game.
From there, it was all Cloudland.
Grayson Cole and the ‘Landers answered on the next drive with a nine-yard run. Cole added the two-point conversion as CHS tied the game at 8-8.
The ‘Landers took the lead as Gavyn Shell scored on a short run, and Landon Barnette added the two-point conversion as CHS took a 16-8 lead midway through the first. Cloudland struck again in the first as Shell scored his second touchdown of the night on a short run, but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful.
Bryce Birchfield added to the Cloudland lead late in the quarter, and Barnette added the two-point conversion as CHS held a 30-8 lead after a quarter of play.
In the second quarter, Shell added a long touchdown run and Birchfield and Barnette connected for a 13-yard touchdown as CHS took a 42-8 advantage.
The ‘Lander defense got in the scoring act as Walker Gouge intercepted a Hancock County pass and returned for a touchdown to extend the CHS lead.
Birchfield added a rushing touchdown as the ‘Landers took a 54-8 lead into the half.
In the second half, Gouge returned a fumble for a scoop and score to account for the final Cloudland score.
Shell had 67 yards on seven carries, while Birchfield had 63 yards on the ground and went 2-for-3 with 83 yards passing.
Cole added 40 rushing yards.
