Cloudland wins on buzzer beater

Cloudland picked up their first win of the season with a 78-76 victory over Patrick Henry in overtime on a buzzer beating putback by Dalton Vines on Friday afternoon in the John Battle Tournament.

The ‘Landers will meet Johnson County on Saturday on the final day. Since both teams met earlier in the week, the coaches agreed to make Saturday’s game a junior varsity game.

On Friday night, the ‘Landers found themselves down 23-12 at the end of the first quarter, and trailed 35-25 at the break.

In the second half, the ‘Landers answered the call in the third quarter as Noah Arnett sparked a 15-3 run that sent Cloudland into the final period with a one-point lead. After ending regulation in a tie, the ‘Landers saw the stage set for the last second heroics.

With the Highlanders down 76-75 with 0.9 showing on the clock, Colby Birchfield drained a free throw to tie the game at 76-76. However, Birchfield’s next shot was off, but Vines grabbed the rebound and hit the show as time expired to send the Highlanders to the 78-76 victory.

“Our kids battled real hard,” Cloudland Head Coach Gary Harrison said. “We were missing a few kids tonight for various reasons. Even though it was bad on my blood pressure, it will make us better in the long run.”

Chris Waggoner had 26 points to pace the ‘Landers, while Birchfield finished with 16 points. Vines finished with 14 points. Cameron Stevens and Jonah Woods had seven and five points apiece.
