Elizabethton had to use every second to remain undefeated.

Austin Cornett hit a buzzer beating 3-pointer to lift the Cyclones to a 54-51 victory over Hampton on Tuesday night in Hampton. The Bulldogs had missed what could have been the game winner with just under five seconds to play.

In the first quarter, Elizabethton used an 11-0 run to pull away to an 18-9 lead, but the Bulldogs battled back to close the gap to four points at the half.

The game was marred by an injury to Elizabethton’s Conley Bowers in the second quarter, and the game was delayed while he was attended to. There was no immediate updates on Bowers condition.

Behind a strong defensive effort, the Bulldogs surged ahead late in the third quarter to take a 40-38 advantage into the final frame. Hampton maintained the lead for most of the final quarter until Teve Mushayamunda drained a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to tie the game. After the Bulldogs missed a contested layup with five seconds to play, Cornett released a long range 3-pointer with a tenth of a second on the clock to send the Cyclones to 6-0 on the season.

Cornett had a team high 17 points for the Cyclones, while Bo Pless added 13 points. Hampton was paced by Coby Jones’ 18 points, and Stanley Valentine tossed in 17 points, nine of which came in the second half.
