Elizabethton had an upset of the top-ranked team in Class 4A in mind on Friday night. However, the visiting Greeneville squad didn’t go along with the plan.

The Cyclones were unable to overcome a tough third quarter in a 24-10 loss to decision to Greeneville in a matchup that paired No. 1 and No. 4 in this week’s Class 4A AP poll.

In the early going, the EHS offense dictated the tempo.

After Greeneville hit a FG to take a 3-0 lead, Elizabethton was able to get the offense moving on the legs of Corey Russell. The Cyclones moved to the Greeneville 2 but a penalty set them back, and they came away empty handed after a missed field goal.

The Green Devils held a 3-0 lead going to the second.

In the second quarter, the Cyclones moved back into GHS territory as Jaxton Holly tied the game up at 3-3 with a 24-yard field goal. Holly’s kick came with just over a minute to play, and the teams remained tied at 3-3 going to the locker room.

In the third quarter, Greeneville took control.

After starting the quarter near midfield, Ty Youngblood and the Greeneville offense moved quickly to take a 10-3 lead. EHS was unable to extend a drive and the Green Devils took advantage to push the lead to 14 points in the opening of the fourth.

After GHS pushed the lead to 24-3, Elizabethton broke back onto the board as Russell hit Evan Perkins for a 21-yard touchdown.

Russell finished with 56 yards on 21 carries, while Carter Everett was 9-of-13 passing for 109 yards. Perkins tallied 74 yards receiving.
