It was safe to say Lindsey Cunningham had a great afternoon on Tuesday.
Cunningham hit a two-run walkoff homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel Elizabethton softball to a 6-4 victory over Happy Valley to extend the Lady Cyclones season in the District 1-AA tournament. Earlier in the day, Elizabethton defeated Sullivan East in an elimination game to advance to the game against Happy Valley as Cunningham allowed just three hits in the game.
Other games in the county saw Unaka softball fall 18-1 to University High in the District 1-A softball tournament, while the Rangers baseball squad saw their season come to a close with a 4-3 defeat against South Greene in an elimination game in the District 1-A baseball tournament.
At Sullivan North, Elizabethton and Happy Valley had a game for the ages.
Caley Hodge drove in the first run of the game for Elizabethton in the first inning, but Happy Valley’s Sydney Puckett answered with a run of her own in the third to tie the game at 1-1. The Lady Warriors took full advantage of an Elizabethton error to score two runs in the fourth , and held a 3-1 lead until Krisley Roberts added another run for the Lady Warriors in the fifth.
The Lady Cyclones got on the board with another Hodge RBI in the sixth inning, and Danielle Loving hit a two-run homerun to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh.
After holding Happy Valley scoreless in the top of the eighth, the stage was set for Cunningham’s game winning two-run homerun.
