It was a classic defensive battle, and Elizabethton made just enough shots to keep their season alive.
The Lady Cyclones edged Happy Valley for a 34-28 victory in the quarterfinals of the District 1-AA tournament at Sullivan East. With the win, EHS advanced to Saturday’s semifinals and also the Region 1-AA tournament, while the Lady Warriors saw their season come to a close.
Points were hard to come by the entire game, but especially hard in the opening minutes.
Kadie Bailey hit a pair of 3-pointers and Kaylen Shell countered with a jumper and two free throws to account for all the scoring in the first eight minutes. Bailey’s six points gave HV a 6-4 lead after a quarter of play.
The offenses settled down in the second quarter, but neither was able to get much separation. Kaitlin Bailey and Renna Lane hit key shots for the Lady Cyclones to counter shots from Happy Valley’s Jaiden Clark, Casey Campbell, and Emily Lunceford.
That allowed EHS to take a 15-13 advantage into the half.
Elizabethton was able to get little breathing room in the third quarter as they outscored HV 11-7 in the frame. Happy Valley continued to fight, but the Lady Cyclones were able to hold on for the win in the closing minutes.
Bailey had 16 points to lead the way for Elizabethton, while Morgan Headrick finished with six points.
Happy Valley’s Bailey had a team-high 12 points.
Elizabethton will take on Sullivan East at 3:30p on Saturday.
