Elizabethton Rolls As Witten Becomes Winningest Coach In Program History

The Elizabethton football squad made sure Head Coach Shawn Witten had a historic night.

The Cyclones rolled to a 30-7 road victory over Cherokee in a battle of undefeated teams as Witten became the winningest coach in program history.

The Elizabethton defense set the tone on their first series as Jack Blevins tipped a pass that Zach Wallin intercepted and returned it deep into Cherokee territory to set EHS at the 10. Rhett Slagle capped the short drive with a one-yard run as EHS took a 7-0 lead.

The Cyclones pushed the lead to 14-0 midway through the second as William McDuffie scored on a five-yard run.

Elizabethton added a Wallin touchdown off a pass from Slagle, and the Cyclones took a 24-0 lead into the locker room as William Bowers hit a 35-yard field goal.

EHS continued to stymie Cherokee in the second half as Bowers added a 31-yard and a 36-yard field goal to account for the final score.

Slagle was 8-of-13 passing for 121 yards, while CJ Mathes had 82 yards on the ground.
