Fast starts powers wins for Lady Warriors, Bulldogs

Fast starts proved to be the difference in Hampton on Friday night.

The Lady Warriors and Bulldogs used strong first quarters to set the tone as Hampton and Happy Valley split a pair of games. Happy Valley’s girls picked up a 73-42 victory over the Lady Bulldogs, while the Hampton boys took a 78-62 win.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Warriors found their groove early.

Happy Valley limited Hampton to just five first quarter points that gave HV a 19-5 lead after a quarter of play. Hampton battled back in the second quarter, but the Lady Warriors held a 33-24 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, the teams traded points for most of the quarter. Happy Valley led 50-38 after three quarters of play. The Lady Warriors left no doubt by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 23-4 to secure the win.

Kalee Johnson had an impressive performance with 34 points to lead all scorers. Kenzie Davis had seven points, while Bayley McGee, Charli Bare and Emily Whitaker all had six points apiece .Hampton was led by Shy Tuelle’s 11 points. Alexus Grubbs added 10 points.

In the nightcap, Hampton jumped out early. The Bulldogs rolled to a 24-11 first quarter advantage. The Warriors were able to trim three points off the lead prior to half as Hampton held a 39-29 lead at the half.

Happy Valley continued to keep battling by pulling within five points at the end of the quarter. However, Hampton outscored HV 24-13 in the final quarter to take the win.

Adam McClain tallied 20 points to lead Hampton, while Coby Jones tallied 17 points. Wyatt Lyons and Charlie Butler had 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Braden Sams had 12 points to pace HV, while Chris Young and Tyler Torbett had 11 points apiece. Austin Hicks scored 10 points.
