North Greene 62, Unaka 53
The Rangers were unable to hold off North Greene for a big road win.
TJ Good scored 10 points in the opening quarter to lift Unaka to a 15-10 lead after a quarter of play. The teams went back and forth in the second quarter as NG took a slim 32-30 lead at the half.
The Huskies used a big third quarter to get some breathing room as NG outscored Unaka 19-7 in the frame. Unaka kept battling in the final quarter but was unable to make a late run.
John Hardin scored 17 points to pace Unaka, while Aiden Walsh and Good had 12 points apiece for the Rangers.
Lance Carrico scored 23 points to lead North Greene.
Hampton 59, Chuckey-Doak 51
The Bulldogs outlasted the Black Knights for a key district win on the road.
Five Bulldogs scored in the opening quarter as Hampton took a slim 15-11 lead into the second quarter. Chase Davenport scored six second-quarter points for Hampton as the Bulldogs maintained a 29-25 advantage at the half.
Hampton continued to keep CD at bay in the second half as Bryce Fagan scored nine points in the third quarter as HHS held a 46-37 lead after three complete quarters. In the fourth quarter, Hampton was able to secure the win in the closing minutes.
Fagan scored 21 points to pace Hampton, while Davenport scored 20 points. Jayden Nave and Tyler Blevins had six points and five points, respectively.
University High 79, Cloudland 46
The ‘Landers were unable to keep pace with University High on Friday night.
The Bucs took a 25-15 lead into the second quarter and outscored CHS 20-5 in the second. The Landers continued to battle in the second half but were unable to rally.
Uriah Jarrett scored 22 points to lead Cloudland. Nick Caraway scored 11 points. Gavyn Shell added six points.
Brady Weems led UH with 24 points.
Girls
North Greene 50, Unaka 33
The Lady Rangers came up short on the road Friday night.
After North Greene took a 9-5 lead into the second quarter, Unaka battled back as Lauren Lund provided a spark with three 3-pointers. That spark helped the Lady Rangers outscore NG 17-10 in the quarter and Unaka held a 21-19 halftime lead.
The Lady Rangers continued to battle, but North Greene was able to take a 38-29 lead after three complete quarters. Unaka was unable to rally in the final quarter despite a hard-fought battle.
Michelle Shields and Lund had nine points apiece, while Kalli Shephard scored seven points. Emma Douglas added six points.
Hampton 64, Chuckey-Doak 57
The Lady Bulldogs held off a late Chuckey-Doak run to take a crucial win in the district race.
Hampton set the tone early as six Lady Bulldogs scored in the frame, and HHS took a 20-11 lead after a quarter of play. The Lady Bulldogs were able to maintain the lead throughout the second as Hampton led 33-25 at the half.
After the teams traded shots in the third quarter, Hampton was able to hold off a late Lady Black Knights run to secure the win.
Ella Estep had 18 points to lead Hampton, while Piper Helle and Hannah Smith scored 12 points apiece.
Ally Birchfield and Faye Carrico scored eight points each.
Saniah Atchison had 19 points to lead Chuckey-Doak.
Cloudland 43, University High 18
The Lady ‘Landers shook off a slow start on Friday night.
After taking a 4-2 lead into the second quarter, Cloudland outscored UH 12-2 in the second to push the advantage to 16-4 at the half. CHS limited UH to just three points in the third quarter as the Lady ‘Landers seized control and never looked back.
Makinna Shell scored 12 points to lead Cloudland. Eowyn McCoury scored eight points, while Abby Clawson finished with six points. Makenzie Street added five points.
Vania Ortiz led UH with 13 points.
