Friday Round-up: Lady ‘Landers Remain Unbeaten; Bulldogs Pick Up Big District Win

Cloudland 61, Twin Springs (Va.) 20
It was all Cloudland on Friday night.

The Lady ‘Landers raced out to a 21-6 lead to open the game and stormed to a 35-11 halftime lead.

From there, CHS cruised to the nonconference win.
Izabella Christman had 16 points to pace CHS, while Ryan Turbyfill added 14 points.

Makinna Shell and Makenzie Street tossed in eight and five points, respectively.

South Greene 73, Hampton 48
The Lady Bulldogs came up short on the road Friday night.

Hampton jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but SG ended the first quarter on a 10-4 run to close the Lady Bulldog lead to 13-10 after a quarter of play.

After a back-and-forth start to the second quarter, SG used another run to take a 29-20 lead at the half.

Hampton continued to battle but was unable to mount a rally in the second quarter.

Piper Helle had 12 points to lead Hampton. Taylor Berry and Macy Henry had 10 points apiece.

Bearden 67, Elizabethton 36
The Lady Cyclones were unable to solve a stingy Bearden defense on Friday afternoon.

Bearden jumped out to a 17-6 lead after a quarter of play and pushed the advantage to 33-14 at the half.

Elizabethton continued to battle but was unable to close the gap in the second half.

Michelle Shields had 11 points to lead EHS.

Boys
University High 79, Elizabethton 49
The Cyclones were unable to keep up with a strong UH offense in the second half.

The teams battled back and forth before UH took a 37-28 lead into the half.

EHS trimmed the lead to five points in the opening minute of the fourth, but the Bucs outscored Elizabethton 26-5 in the final stanza to take the win.

Andrew Barnett had 11 points, while Will Churchill added 11 eight points. Luke Whaley and Jackson Hobbs had seven and six points, respectively.

Brady Weems led UH with 21 points, and Andrew Cole had 18 points.

Hampton 65, South Greene 49
The Bulldogs slowly pulled away to take a district win on the road.

After SG jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead, Hampton battled back with a run to tie the game and used the momentum to take a 24-15 lead after a quarter of play.

The Bulldogs limited the Rebels for much of the second quarter and held a 36-27 advantage.

South Greene closed within five early in the third, but it was all Hampton from that point as HHS took a 52-41 lead into the fourth and scored the first 10 points of the fourth to leave no doubt.

Hayden Campbell had 22 points to lead HHS, while Michael Anspaugh had 15 points. Geno Carrico scored 12 points.

Cooper Kelly led South Greene with 20 points.

Unaka 58, Hancock County 45
The Rangers shook off a slow start to take a road win on Friday night.

The home-standing Indians took a 12-6 lead after the first quarter and maintained a 22-16 advantage at the half.

Unaka, however, quickly erased the deficit to open the second half by outscoring Hancock County 29-12 to take a 45-34 lead into the final quarter.

From there, the Rangers were able to secure the win.

Mason Wilson led Unaka with 15 points, while Rylan Crabtree had 10 points. Logan Lewis and Marcus Shomaker added nine points each. John Hardin added eight points for Unaka.

Orry Fugate finished with 21 points to lead Hancock County.

Twin Springs 39, Cloudland 38
The ‘Landers were unable to take the win in the closing seconds.

Cloudland took control in the opening stanza and took a 14-4 advantage after eight minutes of play. Twin Springs, however, battled back to close the game to 22-18 at the half.

The defenses set the tone in the second half as points were hard to come by for both squads. The Titans outscored CHS 10-2 in the third to take a slim 28-24 lead.

Cloudland continued to battle but was unable to come out with the win in the closing seconds.

Dylan McClellan had 14 points – 12 of which came in the fourth – while Cain Barnett had 10 points. Nick Caraway had nine points. Kingston Cole added five points.
