Friday Roundup: Hampton boys win, Unaka swept

Hampton 70, North Greene 53 (boys)

Nathan Norris and Wyatt Lyons powered the Bulldogs to take a big district victory on Friday night against the Huskies. Hampton led 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, but took control by doubling up the Huskies in the second quarter to take a 27-17 lead into the half.

From there it was all Hampton as the Bulldogs added 13 points to the lead during the third quarter.

Norris and Lyons had 13 points apiece, while Chris Holtsclaw and Charlie Butler had 10 points apiece. Coby Jones tallied eight points in his return from injury.

South Greene 62, Unaka 54 (girls)

The Lady Rangers had upset on the mind late on Friday night, but South Greene had just enough power.

South Greene saw Unaka cut the lead to nine points in the final minutes, but that was as close as the Lady Rangers could get against one of the top Class A teams in the state. SG held a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, and extended it to 27-18 at the half.

Unaka was unable to keep pace in the third quarter as they were outscored 28-14, but returned the favor in the final period. However, they were unable to close the gap any further then nine points.

Lexi Garland tallied 19 points in the game, while Hannah Tipton had 11 points. Sierra Wright added 10 points.


South Greene 57, Unaka 54 (Boys)

It was a back-and-forth battle from the opening tip.

Unaka was unable to edge back ahead of the Rebels on Friday night. The Rangers led 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, but saw SG take a 28-27 lead at the break. Neither team was unable to pull away from the other, and the Rangers stayed within striking range in the final quarter. However, they were unable to get back in front before time expired.

Joe Searfoss led the way with 17 points, while John Ramsey had 15 points. Colton Chambers finished with 14 points.

North Greene 39, Hampton 34 (girls)

The Lady Bulldogs were unable to overcome a two-point second quarter against North Greene. Hampton jumped out to a 14-10 lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Huskies took an 18-16 advantage into the half after holding Hampton to just two points in the quarter.

The teams traded shots in the third quarter, but North Greene took a five point lead into the final quarter. Hampton was unable to erase the deficit in the final quarter.

Shyanne Tuelle had a game high 19 points. Alexus Grubbs added five points for the Lady Bulldogs.
