Alexus Grubbs scored 20 points to power the Lady Bulldogs to an upset of Class AA Grainger on Monday night. The Lady Griz were ranked No. 5 in the AP Class AA poll.
Hampton came up short in the boys’ game as Grainger used a 24-7 run in the second quarter to pull away to a 63-44 victory.
In the girls’ game, Hampton kept pace with the Lady Griz as the first quarter ended with the Lady Bulldogs trailing 9-7. Grainger held a slim 21-19 advantage at the half.
Hampton battled back in the third quarter to edge ahead to a 31-30 advantage. Neither team could gain separation in the final quarter as regulation ended in a 38-38 tie. After the first overtime ended with teams knotted at 42-42, Hampton limited the Lady Griz to just four points to take the win.
In the boys’ game, the Bulldogs jumped out front early with a 17-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter. However, the second quarter proved to be too much for the Bulldogs as the Griz took a 39-24 advantage into the half.
In the second half, Hampton was unable to trim the lead and make a late rally.
Both Hampton teams will welcome North Greene on Friday night in VanHuss-White Gymnasium.
