HAMPTON – The Lady Bulldogs set the tone early, and the Hampton boys kept up the pace.
Hampton recorded a sweep of Unicoi County on Monday night inside Van Huss/White Gymnasium as the Lady Bulldogs picked up a 73-42 victory and the Bulldogs stormed to a 71-44 win over the Blue Devils.
In the boys’ game, Unicoi kept pace with Hampton in the first quarter as HHS maintained an 18-14 lead after a quarter of play. Stone Hutchinson and the Bulldogs, however, took full control of the game in the second quarter by limiting the Blue Devils to just two points in the frame. Hampton put 21 points on the board to go into the locker room at half with a 39-16 advantage.
The second half saw the Bulldogs erase any thoughts of a Blue Devil comeback by extending their lead to 29 points in the opening minutes. From there, it was all Hampton as the Bulldogs cruised to the victory.
Stanley Valentine led the way with a game-high 16 points. Hutchinson finished with 13 points. Coby Jones tallied 12 points, and Nathan Norris rounded out the Hampton scorers in double-digits with 10 points.
In the varsity opener, the Lady Bulldogs slowly pulled away from the Lady Blue Devils as Hampton held a 16-7 lead after a quarter of play. After taking a 23-8 lead midway through the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs took a 28-14 lead into the half.
Hampton took control for good in the third quarter as a quick 13-point run, seven of which came from Alexis Bowers, to extend the lead to 28 points, and the Lady Bulldogs scored 29 points in the third to hold a 57-26 lead heading to the fourth quarter. From there, Hampton kept the Lady Blue Devils at bay to take the win.
Alexus Grubbs tallied 21 points, while Bowers finished with 16 points. Shyanne Tuelle tallied 12 points. Tatum Street had 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs open District 1-A Tournament play on Saturday at Daniel Boone High School.
