Hampton, Unaka split District tilt

It was a split decision in Hampton on Friday night.

The Unaka ladies used a strong first quarter to take a 46-33 victory over Hampton, while the Bulldogs picked up a 68-53 win over the Rangers in the varsity nightcap.

In the varsity opener, the Lady Rangers set the tone with their defense.

Unaka held Hampton just three points in the first quarter, while Myah Parlier scored five points to help power UHS to a 12-3 lead. Hampton settled In during the second quarter as Brooke Hughes tallied eight points in the period. Parlier, however, countered with eight points of her own as Unaka extended the lead to 27-15 at the half.

The Lady Bulldogs’ saw Stephanie Campbell get going in the third quarter to trim four points off the Unaka advantage. The Lady Rangers, however, secured the game in the game’s final quarter to prevent a Hampton comeback.

Parlier finished the game with 23 points, while Cydney Forney and Macy Ensor had five points each.

Hughes had 14 points to pace Hampton. Campbell finished with 12 points.

In the boys game, the Bulldogs got the hot start.

Six Hampton players recorded points as the balanced attack pushed HHS to a 24-9 lead after eight minutes of play. The Bulldogs continued to set the tone by outscoring Unaka 14-10 in the second quarter to take a 38-19 lead at the half.

Isaac Hill scored seven points for Unaka in the third quarter. Hampton, however, saw Jordan Bentley as the Rangers were unable to make a significant dent in the HHS lead. The fourth quarter saw the Bulldogs maintain the advantage to secure the win.

Bentley paced Hampton with 17 points, while Morgan Lyons tossed in 11 points. Izack Hill had 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Hill had a game-high 19 points for Unaka. Ryan Johnson added 15 points.
