It was a cold Monday night, but that didn’t stop Happy Valley from getting a sweep.
The Warriors and Lady Warriors both picked up nonconference wins over University High inside Brooks Gymnasium. Happy Valley saw the boys team use a strong third quarter to take a 62-38 victory, while the Lady Warriors held on to take a 54-43 win.
In the boys’ game, the teams traded shots early as HV held a 15-13 advantage at the end of the quarter. Both teams continued making shots in the second as UH trimmed the lead to one point at the break.
However, the Warriors pulled away in the third quarter. Happy Valley outscored the Jr. Bucs 21-4 in the third period. The defensive lockdown continued as HV limited the Jr. Bucs to just four points in the final quarter.
Austin Hicks led the way with 17 points, while Dillion Barlow added nine points. Brayden Sams and Nathan Kyte had eight points apiece. Sam Blevins and Josh Hammonds had seven and six points, respectively.
At the start, the Lady Warriors saw the Lady Jr. Bucs jump out to an early 7-2 lead before rallying back to pull within one point at the end of the quarter. Kalee Johnson started the second quarter strong and pushed the lead to 25-20 at the half.
After maintaining a 31-27 lead at the end of the third quarter, UH cut the deficit to two points before Happy Valley pulled away for the win.
Johnson led all scorers with 26 points. Bayley McGee had 10 points, and Emily Whitaker scored six points in the game.
UH was led by Lexi Crouthers’ 15 points.
