It was a mixed bag for Happy Valley on Saturday.
The Lady Warriors pulled away to take a 53-31 victory over Unicoi County, but the Warriors were unable to answer a late run in a 69-47 defeat to the Blue Devils.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Warriors counted four points from Nelee Griffith with five from Adrienne Henegar. That allowed Happy Valley to take an 11-4 lead into the second quarter.
Five Lady Warriors scored in the second quarter as HV maintained a nine-point lead at the half.
Kalee Johnson and Kenzie Davis added four points apiece in the third stanza to help the Lady Warriors extend the lead, and from there it was all Happy Valley.
Kaitlyn Roberts had a banner day with 12 points, while Johnson scored 10 points. Davis added nine points. Henegar and Sydney Puckett had seven and five points, respectively.
In the boys’ game, Austin Hicks scored six points in the first quarter, but the Blue Devils held a 23-16 lead. Josh Hammonds powered the Warriors to close the gap in the second period as HV closed within a point at the break.
The third quarter saw the teams play even, but Unicoi took control in the fourth quarter and never looked back.
Hammonds led the way with 16 points. Hicks added 12 points, while Tyler Torbett added eight points.
