The Lady Bulldogs put up a fight, but the final shot didn’t bounce in their favor.
Hampton came up short in overtime as they fell 51-49 to Oliver Springs in Class A sectional action on Monday night at Oliver Springs. The loss ends Hampton’s season with a 19-13 record.
After the Lady Bobcats jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, Hampton was unable to cut into the deficit as the Lady Bulldogs trailed 15-8 at the end of the first quarter.
However, Hampton battled back to tie the game at 26-26 with just under two minutes remaining. Tatum Street knocked down a shot right before the half as HHS took a 28-26 advantage into the locker room at half.
Senior Alexis Bowers and Alexus Grubbs added points to open the third quarter, and Megan Garland gave Hampton a 39-32 lead after three quarters of play. However, Oliver Springs quickly rebounded with a run of their own. Grubbs gave Hampton a 47-44 lead with just under a minute to play in regulation, but a three-point play on the other end forced overtime knotted at 47-47.
In overtime, Bowers put the Bulldogs on the board. Oliver Springs took a 51-49 with 30 second remaining. Hampton had a last second shot bounce off the rim after the Lady Bobcats missed a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining.
Grubbs paced Hampton with 22 points, while Bowers tossed in 19 points. Courtney Griffith led Oliver Springs with 22 points.
