It was a busy night inside the Dog House and at the end of the night, Hampton reigned.
The Lady Bulldogs held on to take a 48-43 victory over University High while the Bulldogs ran away with a 71-56 win over the Bucs.
In addition to game action, it was Basketball Sweetheart night for the school.
Hampton’s Megan Garland and Shy Tuelle scored the game’s opening points, but the Lady Bucs answered with a quick 5-0 run. Hampton responded with a 10-4 run to take a 14-10 lead into the second quarter.
UH regained the lead early in the second quarter before Tuelle tied the game up at 18-18 with a trey. The Lady Bucs ended the half on an 8-2 run to take a 26-20 lead into the half.
After UH extended the lead to nine in the opening seconds of the third quarter, Hampton came back with a vengeance.
Tuelle and Kinzey Hill kicked off an 11-3 run to close the gap to one point. A quick 4-0 Hampton run gave HHS a 35-34 lead entering the final eight minutes.
The Lady Bucs battled back to take a 41-39 lead with three minutes to play. However, Garland knocked down a pair of free throws and Tuelle added a jumper to start a 9-2 winning run.
Tuelle had 24 points to lead all scorers, while Alexus Grubbs had 10 points. Garland added eight points.
In the boys’ game, the Bulldogs scored early and often.
Jose Velazquez scored the first five points for Hampton and Wyatt Lyons pushed the lead to 7-2. The Bucs, however, kept pace in the early going as HHS took a 16-15 lead into the second quarter.
Hampton, however, entered control in the second.
Dru Owens kicked off the period with a 3-pointer which sparked a 9-0 run. Hampton continued to push the lead as they maintained a 36-18 advantage at the half.
A 10-3 Hampton run to start the third quarter stopped any thought of a UH rally.
Lyons tallied 16 points to lead all scorers. Owens and Chris Timmons had 14 points apiece. Velazquez had 13 points.
