When Hampton had their backs to the wall, the Lady Bulldogs answered the call.
Hampton outlasted University High in the District 1-A tournament quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at Sullivan North. With the win, the Lady Bulldogs advance to Saturday’s semifinals against North Greene as well as secured a berth in next week’s Region 1-A tournament.
Hampton will take on top-seeded North Greene at 4 p.m., on Saturday with a spot in the District 1-A Championship game on the line.
The Lady Bucs look poised to take the upset in the early going.
Hampton was held to just a Haley Carden bucket in the first eight minutes of the game as UH took a 5-2 lead into the second quarter. Brooke Hughes and Stephanie Campbell picked up the HHS offense with big shots from behind the arc as a late Hampton bucket gave them a 13-11 lead at the half.
Points continued to be at a premium in the second half.
University High chipped away at the Hampton lead that shots from Leanne Guinn and Carden allowed them to take. The Lady Bucs took a 19-11 lead into the final quarter.
The teams traded shots over the first half of the fourth quarter. Hughes, however, was determined to be sure that the Lady Bulldogs would advance as she hit a 3-pointer to break a 26-26 stalemate with just over three minutes to play. UH was able to cut it to one, but Hampton secured the game at the free throw line to secure the win.
Hughes finished with 14 points to lead Hampton, while Carden tallied seven points. Guinn added five points.
