Elizabethton had the hits, but was able to get the runs in a defensive clash.
The Lady Cyclones fell 3-2 to Unicoi County in a heartbreaker in the District 1-AA Softball Championship.
After a scoreless first inning, Unicoi put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Elizabethton saw Lauren Brickey and Abbi McKinney got base in the away side of the third, but EHS was unable to plate the runs. The fourth inning saw both teams get retired in order.
The Lady Cyclones evened the score in the fifth inning. Brickey hit a double to centerfield to score Kennedy Richardson and Macie Herrmann.
Neither team was able to break the stalemate in the scheduled innings. After the first inning and a half of extra softball went scoreless, Unicoi took the crown on a walkoff deadball – called when a throw to third went out of play.
Brickey finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs, while McKinney went 2-for-3. Combined, Elizabethton outhit the Lady Blue Devils 9-6.
In the circle, Brickey went distance as she allowed just one earned run on six hits.
