Lady Cyclones Win Thriller To Claim Second Straight Region 1-3A Championship
In thrilling fashion, Elizabethton captured their second straight Region 1-3A Championship.
The Lady Cyclones outlasted Greeneville for a 59-58 win in the Region 1-3A Championship game inside Treadway Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
With the win, Elizabethton will host Knox Halls on Saturday night in the Class 3A sectionals. A win will send the Lady Cyclones to Murfreesboro for the second straight season.
It was an epic classic from the start.
The teams traded shots throughout the first half as Renna Lane provided an early Elizabethton spark with 11 points in the first quarter, and the Lady Cyclones held a slim 17-16 lead after eight minutes of play.
The teams played nearly even again through the second quarter as EHS pushed the lead to 30-27 at the half.
After Elizabethton ended the third quarter with a 45-42 lead, Greeneville used a 7-0 run to take a 49-48 advantage with just over five minutes to play in the game.
Elizabethton, however, answered as Olivia Holly hit a 3-pointer and a Lina Lyon bucket pushed hte EHS lead back to six points.
After Greeneville cut into the lead, Reliey Whitson hit a key 3-pointer for EHS with 2:45 to play that pushed the Lady Cyclones back up five.
The Lady Greene Devils cut into the lead once again, and Elizabethton held strong on a last-second shot to secure the win.
Lane finished with 19 points to lead the way for Elizabethton. Lina Lyon and Holly had 10 points apiece.
Whitson and Katie Lee had nine and six points, respectively.
Lyon was named the Region 1-3A Tournament MVP, while Marlea Mathena, Holly, Lane, and Whitson were named to the All-Tournament team.
Greeneville’s Lauren Bailey had 17 points, while Kyla Jobe had 10 points.
