The Unaka softball team got the job on Thursday.
The Lady Rangers captured the District 1-A title with a 3-1 victory over North Greene at ETSU in the second game of the championship series. The Lady Huskies forced the extra game with a 3-2 victory over Unaka.
In the second game, offense was at a premium. North Greene took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Kaitlyn Roberts scored off a Unaka error. The Lady Rangers, however, responded quickly.
Tayla Potter and Sarah Tipton hit singles to open the frame, and Katlyn Weaver knocked a double into the outfield to plate the two runs. Taylor Shanks drove Weaver across the plate to give UHS a 3-1 lead after five.
Both teams went three-up and three-down in the sixth, and Unaka stopped any thought of a comeback with a solid defensive effort in the seventh to secure the game.
Weaver and Shanks were both 2-for-3, while Tipton was 2-for-4. In all, Unaka recorded 11 hits in the game.
Corie Scheuttler pitched a gem in the circle as she allowed just one unearned run on four hits.
The first game saw Unaka take an early 1-0 lead, but the Lady Huskies played one in the fourth and two in the fifth for the decisive advantage.
Sarah Hardin went 2-for-3, while Madison Pierce and Tipton went 2-for-4.
Hardin was handed the loss in the circle despite allowing just five hits in a complete game effort.
