‘Landers Come Up Short Against Longhorns

Cloudland came up short on Friday night.

The ‘Landers were unable to battle back as they dropped a hard-fought 27-16 decision to Johnson County in nonconference play at Orr Field. Cloudland moved to 2-2 on the year, while Johnson County improved to 4-0.

The ‘Landers got on the board early.

Grayson Cole had a long run to get into scoring position, and then scored on a short run. CHS added the two-point conversion. Johnson County answered with a score, but Cloudland held an 8-6 advantage after a quarter of play.

After the Longhorns scored in the opening seconds of the second quarter, Cloudland answered again as Cole scored his second touchdown of the night. Bryce Birchfield added the two-point conversion to give CHS a 16-12 lead with 5:06 left in the half.

The Longhorns, however, scored on a long run to take a 20-16 lead into the half.

The teams continued to battle in the second half, but Cloudland was unable to get back in front.

Johnson County added a touchdown midway through the fourth to secure the win.

Cole had 156 yards on 26 carries. Landon Barnette added 43 rushing yards.

Juan Meija had 27 carries for 213 yards, while Jace Stout had 90 passing yards and 63 rushing yards.
