Cloudland came up in a heartbreaker on opening night.
The ‘Landers were unable to score in the closing minute in a 24-22 loss to Midway at Orr Field on Friday night.
CHS struck first with four minutes left in the first as Grayson Cole broke free for a 51-yard touchdown. The senior added the two-point conversion to give CHS an 8-0 lead.
Midway responded early with a long touchdown pass to cut into the CHS lead. Cloudland regained control as Gavyn Shell caught a Jordan Hodges pass for a 14-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful as CHS held a 14-7 lead.
Midway answered quickly to even things up. Cloudland moved into the Green Wave territory late in the quarter, but a turnover ended the drive.
After the Green Wave scored 10 points in the third to take a 24-14 lead, the ‘Landers kept battling.
Landon Barnett capped a strong drive with a three-yard touchdown run with four minutes to play.
On the next Midway drive, the CHS defense came up big with a recovered fumble. Cloudland quickly moved inside the Midway 10.
However, the ‘Landers were unable to score as Midway held CHS out of the end zone on fourth and goal inside the two.
Cloudland’s defense forced a Midway punt in the final seconds, but the ‘Landers were unable to capitalize before time ran out.
