The Cloudland boys’ basketball team saw able to dig out of a big hole. However, University High kept on digging.
The ‘Landers erased a 20-point second quarter deficit but dropped a 67-56 decision to the Jr. Bus inside Sonny Smith Gymnasium. The Lady ‘Landers were never really challenged en route to a 48-25 victory.
In the boys’ game, the ‘Landers saw UH get out to a quick start. After taking an 18-7 lead into the second quarter, the Jr. Bucs pushed the lead to 30-10 with just under four minutes to play. Cloudland, however, wasn’t going to go do without a fight.
The ‘Landers went on a quick 9-0 run to close the gap and ended the quarter on an 18-3 run to pull within 33-29 at the half.
CHS continued to have the momentum after the half as they jumped in front of the Jr. Bucs. University High countered to regain the lead and slowly extend it back out to double-digits. In the final minutes of the fourth, Cloudland pulled within five points but was unable to get any closer.
Robert Leeper had 17 points to pace Cloudland. Connor Birchfield had 11 points, while Malachi Benfield and Jake Perrigoy had eight points apiece.
In the girls’ game, Cloudland jumped out early and never looked back.
The Lady Landers took a 14-3 lead in the first quarter and continued to keep the Lady Bucs stymied in the second quarter. CHS led 27-9 at the half.
Cloudland left no doubt in the second half as they limited the opportunities that UH had.
Stacia Wilson led the way with 11 points, while Trinity Vines tallied 10 points. Kenzie Birchfield added six points.
Gracie Crabtree had 11 points to lead UH.
