It was a classic postseason battle between the Cloudland and University High boys. However, the final seconds saw the luck go against the ‘Landers.
Cloudland was edged 56-54 as University High took the win on a Dayshawn Hamilton bucket with 5.2 seconds in overtime in the District 1-A tournament at Daniel Boone High School.
The ‘Landers jumped out early as Preston Benfield scored four early points to power CHS to an 8-3 lead midway through the quarter. The Bucs, however, stormed back as Brent Fields hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push UH into the lead, but Colby Birchfield and Zac Benfield added two points apiece to regain the lead for Cloudland. UH scored four points in the final minute to take a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw the teams trade shots early as P. Benfield hit a runner that gave Cloudland a three point lead with just over a minute to play. University High once again hit two baskets in the final minute of the quarter to take a 24-22 lead at the half.
Birchfield opened the third quarter with a tough shot in the paint to tie the game, but the Bucs countered on the other end. The ‘Landers saw Jesse Potter hit a 3-pointer and P. Benfield and Birchfield add buckets to give CHS a 30-28 lead midway through the period.
The game of runs continued as the teams swapped the lead before a 7-2 Cloudland run gave the ‘Landers a 39-37 advantage heading into the final quarter.
P. Benfield knocked down shots to keep pace with the Bucs to open the fourth, and Z. Benfield tied the game at 46-46 with 2:11 to play. A free throw by P. Benfield and a Birchfield basket put the ‘Landers up, but University High battled to force overtime. Cloudland saw a late foul call go against them with 2.5 seconds remaining as the officials called an offensive foul under the basket.
In overtime, the offense was limited and the Bucs took advantage of a deflected pass to set up Hamilton’s shot to take the victory.
P. Benfield led all scorers with 18 points, while Birchfield tossed in 12 points. Z. Benfield finished with 10 points.
