The Hampton boys’ basketball kept on track Friday night in buzzer-beater fashion
Morgan Lyons hit a bucket with two seconds remaining to lift the Bulldogs to a 52-50 win over University High in District 1-A action. In the girls’ game, Hampton used a big fourth quarter to roll to a 64-36 win over the Lady Bucs.
The boys’ game was an intense matchup from the opening tip.
In the first quarter, the teams traded shots as UH held a 12-10 lead after a quarter of play. The Bulldogs, however, battled back to take a 25-23 lead at the break.
The intensity picked up in the second half.
The teams continued to trade shots as neither was able to get separation from the other. University High regained the lead and held a 41-37 advantage with eight minutes remaining.
The Bulldogs answered with a run to regain the lead early in the fourth. After the teams traded shots for the final minutes – including a UH bucket with 10 seconds remaining to tie the game – Lyons was able to put Hampton up in the closing seconds.
Lyons led Hampton with 18 points. Caleb Oaks scored 10 points in the win, while Jordan Bentley added seven points.
Kaleb Meredith led UH with 19 points.
The Lady Bulldogs left no doubt in the fourth quarter.
After taking a 14-10 lead after a quarter of play, Hampton pushed its advantage to 26-22 at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs were unable to get any breathing room in the third quarter as they pushed the lead to six points. In the final quarter, it was all Hampton as HHS ended the game on a 26-5 run to secure the win.
Hannah Collins led the way with 15 points for Hampton. Linsey Jenkins had nine points, while Nicole Guy and Destini Milhorn scored eight points. Hazen Brummitt and Sara Orr had six and five points, respectively.
