The Unaka Lady Rangers made a late run to try and keep their season alive. However, Kendall Mull and the Lady ‘Landers had other ideas.
Mull scored 10 of her 29 points in overtime to power the Lady ‘Landers to a 51-44 victory over Unaka in the District 1-A Tournament on Friday night at Daniel Boone High School. Cloudland advances to play No. 1 South Greene on Saturday in the semifinals at 4p., and also earned a regional tournament berth with the win.
Sierra Wright and Renya Austin sandwiched a Shian Strickland jumper to give the Lady Rangers an early 4-2 lead, but Mull drained a 3-pointer to spark a 9-0 run capped by a jumper from Payton Johnson. After the teams traded shots to end the quarter, Cloudland maintained a 13-6 lead heading into the second.
Ashley Doss opened the scoring for Unaka with a pair of free throws, but Mull countered with a Cloudland bucket. The Lady Rangers went on a run of their own to close the gap, but Mull and Johnson added shots to give Cloudland a 23-14 lead at the break.
Unaka quickly stormed back in the third quarter by going on a 13-2 run by limiting Cloudland to just two free throws during the stretch while Sarah Tipton scored seven points. Cloudland battled back as Mull scored the final four points of the period to give CHS a 31-29 lead entering the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter, Hannah Tipton capped off a 10-3 run that gave Unaka a 39-33 lead. However, Johnson answered for for Cloudland with with four of the next eight points to regain a two-point lead including a basket with 50 seconds remaining that gave CHS a 41-39 advantage. Kaitlyn Weaver, however, hit a basket with 24 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime.
The extra period saw Mull take control of the game as she hit back-to-back 3-pointers to get the Lady ‘Landers some separation. That would be enough as Cloudland held on to advance.
Johnson joined Mull in double-digits with 14 points for Cloudland. Unaka was paced by S. Tipton’s 11 points, while Weaver finished with 10 points.
