Photo Gallery: Cyclones Come Up Short Against Unicoi; Lady Cyclones Pull Away In Fourth For Win

It was a split night at Elizabethton on Tuesday.

The Lady Cyclones pulled away in the final quarter to take a 51-38 victory over Unicoi County, while the Cyclones were unable to make a late run in a 58-45 decision to the Blue Devils.

In the girls’ game, it was a back-and-forth battle.

Elizabethton used an 11-2 run in the opening quarter to take a 13-9 lead after a quarter of play.

After Unicoi battled back to regain the lead, Jamira Smalls hit back-to-back shots to answer for EHS. Unicoi, however, held a 22-21 lead at the half.

Michelle Shields opened the half with the first six points for Elizabethton, and Marlee Mathena hit a jumper to push EHS back into the lead. The teams traded shots as EHS held a 32-29 lead after three complete.

The Lady Cyclones left no doubt in the fourth.

Elizabethton opened the quarter on a 10-0 run to take full control and never looked back.

Mathena led the way with 17 points, while Shields had 16 points. Reiley Whitson had seven points.

Allie Lingerfelt had 26 points to pace Unicoi.

In the boys’ game, Elizabethton battled back from a hot Unicoi start.
Jackson Hobbs scored the first seven points for Elizabethton, as Unicoi jumped out to an 18-10 lead after a quarter of play.

The Cyclones continued to battle as they pulled back into striking distance before a late Blue Devil run pushed the UC lead to 35-24 at the half.

In the third quarter, Elizabethton used a run of their own to get back in the game as Will Churchhill hit some key shots and the Black and Orange pulled within two points before Unicoi took a 42-37 lead after three complete quarters.

In the final quarter, Elizabethton was unable to complete the rally as Unicoi was able to hold onto the win.

Churchhill had 15 points for Elizabethton, while Hobbs had 11 points. Hudson Smith and Mac Paulson had seven points apiece.

Cody Jones and Jackson Simmons had 18 and 16 points, respectively, to lead Unicoi.
