The Cyclones fought back in style. However, they were unable to take advantage of the extra time.

Elizabethton fell in heartbreaking fashion as they dropped a 3-2 decision to Sullivan South in the District 1-A/AA Championship game at Citizen’s Bank Stadium on Thursday night.

The Cyclones jumped out an early lead as Daniel Bolognese scored in the game’s second minute. The Rebels, however, answered in the 17th minute, and then took a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute – which was the halftime score.

The teams continued to battle physically in the second half as neither team found advancing the ball easy. Elizabethton kept pushing, and finally broke onto the board in the 78th minute with a Teve Mushayamunda goal to force overtime.

After the first extra period ended in a 2-2 deadlock, the Rebels scored the winning goal to claim the District crown.

Elizabethton will travel to Greeneville on Tuesday to take on the Greene Devils in the Region 1-A/AA tournament.
