In a battle of state-ranked teams, Cloudland held the upper hand.
The Lady ‘Landers used a fourth-quarter run to pull away and take a 34-22 victory over North Greene on Tuesday night inside Sonny Smith Gymnasium.
In the boys’ game, North Greene took control early and took a 77-35 win over the ‘Landers.
In the girls’ game, the defenses set the tone.
After NG scored the first point on a free throw, Cloudland went on a 6-0 run that included points from Saharra McKinney and McKenzie Street. North Greene trimmed the lead with a quick run of their own as CHS held an 8-6 lead after a quarter of play.
Neither team was able to get on the board until 2:29 left in the second as Makinna Shell hit a basket. That kick-started a 6-0 run over a minute with another Shell basket and a shot from McKinney. That allowed Cloudland to take a 14-6 lead at the half.
North Greene battled back once again in the third as they closed with 20-17 in the closing minutes of the third, but CHS answered with a key basket to take a 22-17 lead into the final stanza.
Ryan Turbyfill opened the fourth with a basket, and that jumpstarted a 12-2 Cloudland run as CHS took control to secure the win.
Street led Cloudland with nine points, while Izabella Christman and Turbyfill had seven points apiece. Shell and McKinney had four points apiece.
In the boys’ game, North Greene jumped out early.
The Huskies took a 27-3 lead in the first quarter, but Nick Caraway hit back-to-back 3-pointers to get the CHS offense going.
Cloudland continued to battle, but the ‘Landers were unable to mount a rally.
Caraway had 16 points to lead Cloudland, while Cooper Smith had 11 points.
Jason Britton led all scorers with 26 points for North Greene.
