The Unaka boys’ basketball program snapped a streak on Tuesday night.
The Rangers picked up a big 54-49 victory over Cloudland inside Sonny Smith Gymnasium to snap an 11-game losing streak to the ‘Landers. In the girls’ game, Cloudland captured a 56-36 win over the Lady Rangers.
In the boys’ game, it was a game of runs in the early going.
Unaka jumped out to a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Cloudland clawed back to even things up midway through the quarter. The Rangers, however, used a late first-half run to take a 27-22 lead into the locker room at half.
It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the second half as neither team was able to get separation. Unaka was able to secure the win late to pick up the District 1-A win.
John Ramsey led the way with 17 points for the Rangers – who set the tone inside the paint. Will Sexton added 14 points, and sharpshooter Isaac Hill tossed in 10 points for Unaka.
Cloudland was paced by Robert Leeper’s 14 points. Josh Blair and Elijah Blair had 11 and nine points, respectively.
In the girls’ game, Cloudland pulled away in the second quarter and never looked back. After leading 11-7 after a quarter of play, CHS outscored the Lady Rangers 20-8 in the stanza to take control.
The Lady Rangers were able to cut into the CHS lead in the third quarter, but the Lady ‘Landers answered to secure the win.
Trinity Vines scored 18 points in the win, while Megan Lunsford added 11 points. Gracie Freeman added nine points for the Cloudland effort. Mandy Benfield finished with seven points.
Savannah Tipton led Unaka with 14 points. Myah Parlier added seven points for the Lady Rangers.
