It came down to a winner take all matchup, and the Rangers had just enough in the tank.
Unaka claimed the District 1-A title with a 4-2 victory over South Greene in the “if-necessary” game on Wednesday evening at Tusculum College. The win came after the Rebels powered their way to a 10-4 victory in the first game.
With the victory, Unaka will host a Region 1-A game next Monday.
In the final game, Unaka had to dig themselves out of an early hole.
After a scoreless first inning, South Greene took a 2-0 lead in the visitors side of the second. The Rangers trimmed the lead with a run in the home side of the frame.
Unaka jumped into the lead in the next inning with textbook baseball. The Rangers put two runs on the board as Austin Kings and Dakota Gallimore touched home plate. Abram Hill scored the game’s final run in the sixth after a Blake King single.
The Rebels, however, didn’t go down without a fight. South Greene loaded the bases with two outs, but the Ranger defense held on for the win.
On the mound, John Boy Ramsey picked up the win with an impressive complete game effort as he allowed just five hits.
