The Rangers got into the district win column in a big way.

The Unaka boys’ basketball team picked up their first Watauga Valley win of the season with a 53-50 upset of University High on Stoney Creek Tuesday. In the girls’ game, the Lady Rangers rolled to a 62-31 win.

In the boys’ game, the Rangers took control early.

Unaka raced out to a 21-12 lead with some hot shooting in the first quarter. The Bucs, however, trimmed the lead in the second quarter, and the Rangers maintained a 29-28 lead at the break.

Points were hard to come by for both teams in the third quarter.

The Rangers were led by Sexton’s 20 points. Dylan Whitehead had a big night as he finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Ramsey added seven big points.

Marshall Fleenor led UH with 14 points.

The girls’ game was all Unaka.
