BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. – No more ‘New Year resolutions’ for Hampton’s Adam “Primetime” Townsend.
The opening fight for 2015 was about sending a message to the national brands for mixed-martial arts.
Hampton’s Townsend recorded his 12th win as a MMA professional fighter with a third round, rear-naked choke against “Relentless” Craig Johnson in the main event of Apex Fights 4, sponsored by Valor Fights, Saturday night at the Dickie Warren Dome in Blountville. The win was Townsend’s sixth win by a finish.
D-Evil fight team, based out of Evolution Sports Gym in Elizabethton, was represented well in the pro-card with Dustin “All Day” Long moving his record to 6-1 for his career in a second round win via RNC against Dameon Melton.
Townsend, currently on a six win streak, jumped a pair of rungs on the MMA ladder with Friday’s triumph, fighting at 170 lb., primarily fighting at the 140-145 range.
“Primetime” showed no change, staying on the attack of Johnson (7-4) in the early going of the fight and used his strength to counter any would-be takedowns from the “Relentless” attack of Johnson.
After getting shaken up with an injury in the second round, Townsend scored the go-ahead submission with 1:28 in the third round.
Currently unsigned, the victory for Townsend builds the foundation for what looks to be a bright start for 2015.
Co-Main Event: Dustin Long vs Dameon Melton
“All Day” started off the Carter County flare on the pro-card with a highly-contest affair with Melton.
Melton, who entered with a 3-10 pro-record, came out of the gate swinging. Melton pegged Long with tough shots throughout the contest, including a gash to the forehead off a knee in round two.
In round two, Melton scored an early takedown but Long stayed on the offensive before gaining top-level. “All Day” locked in with the ‘ground-and-pound’, including a heavy barrage of knees, before scoring the win at the 4:41-mark locking in the RNC on a second attempt.
The duo ended the busy night of MMA in Sullivan County that featured 15 fights on the main card.
